Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Although the roots of this plant can not be harvest until it is approx. 3 years old, the plant with its beautiful flowers in late summer beautifies any aromatic garden.
Licorice reaches a height of up to 1m. Roots of this plant be used to sweeten drinks and teas because it is 50 times sweeter than sugar. Its roots are also used in liqueurs and medicinal preparations and as a food additive. In Italy you can still find shops that sell it dry in boxes as candy.
Glycyrrhiza glabra is also an effective medicinal plant against ulcers, hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, coughing and upper respiratory problems.
It is also has strong antiviral effect and recently its effect against labial herpes was discovered.
