In Spain it this plant is still growing wild in the Pyrenees. But because of its resistance to frost is widespread throughout northern Europe and particularly in Scandinavia it is a widely cultivated aromatic.

The leaves, roots and seeds are edible, taste of sweet aniseed and especially seeds are used as condiment. As a medicinal plant it is used for stomach problems, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, colds and flu.

The plant reaches a height of 1.50m in the garden and has the best flavor in a sunny position.
