This wonderful perennial tropical plant originally from India and Nepal, tolerates frost for a short period of time like canna plants. With sufficient temperature and good watering, Hawaiian ginger reaches heights of 2.50 m with impressive fragrant flowers. Potted plants are smaller, but will be easier to maintain during the winter.

Recent medical studies have shown that Villosina containing Kahili is a strong cytotoxicity for cancer cells.

In tropical areas, particularly New Zealand or Hawaii, Kahili ginger has become an invasive species.
