Blackthorn is an estimated medicinal plant for its fruits and flowers, for their astringent and fever-reducing effects, it also improves intestinal transit and its numerous vitamins make it a tonic. The fruit is also very useful for a good facial mask. It blooms in March and is visited by bees and butterflies. The fruits (the sloes) should be collected after the first frost as this sweetens the fruit. and can be used to prepare jams and liqueurs (such as Pacharán in Navarra and the Basque Country).
