Soapberry, Soapnut seeds (Sapindus Saponaria)

Sapindus saponaria is native to Central and South America. The trees reach a height of 3-5 meters in the wild as a shrub. The yellow fruits become translucent when ripe. The fruit peels/shells are rich in saponins, after removing the seeds they can be used as detergent.

Put the shells in a cloth bag to use in the washing machine. Depending on the hardness of the water you will need 4-8 shells. They can also be used as shampoos or shower gels.

The washing nuts saponins lose their effectiveness after 22 days, they are cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional detergents.

Compared to the washing nut tree of India (Sapindus mukorossi) sapindus saponaria is significantly more resistant to cold and tolerates temperatures below zero.
