Sea fennel , Rock samphire Seeds (crithmum L.)

This plant 10 to 50 cm in height is able to survive in resistant salty environments. It grows in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and in the Canary and Balearic Islands, even on the coast of the Black Sea. It is usually found in cliffs areas and crevices in the rocks. It flowers from July to October. Its flowers are yellow with five petals arranged umbeliforme way. The fleshy leaves of sea fennel are rich in vitamin C and it used to be collected in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries on European shores. Many sailors took pickled samphire on their trips because of its effect against scurvy. Its spicy flavor is reminiscent of common fennel and goes perfectly with salads. For frying breaded vegetable for (for fish, cheeses and grilled meat) and Risotto it is also an exceptional condiment.

Soil: It likes rocky substrates but also grows well in pots and in the garden. It is a hardy plant.

Light: Full sun.

Multiplication: by cuttings is easy and also by seeds. Must be covered with a thin layer of substrate.

In Winter: Best in the garden, weather resistant to temperatures of 0 ° C. In pots placed in a cool place away from heat sources.

Uses:

In the kitchen: In salads, canned vinegar in the risotto, as chips or Wok. Its use is common in traditional Greek cuisine, English, Majorca and the Canary.
