Common Columbine is a beautiful perennial plant that appears on numerous engravings of medieval paintings. Perhaps this is the reason why there are so many different varieties of this plant in the wild which have many different colors of flowers. In Germany and other European countries this species is protected as it is in danger of extinction. Its three-lobed leaves are blue-green and are covered with an almost imperceptible hair. In the Middle Ages it was used as a medicinal plant for impotence, liver and spleen ailments. However, its toxic components means it is only to be used on prescription from an expert.
