Kiwano, Horned Melon Seeds (Cucumis metuliferus)
A tropical fruit that does not need a tropical climate. We sowed the seeds in April indoors, then planted outdoors in May and started harvesting in September /October. The plants grow very well, but they need the help of a trellis for the vines. The kiwano is resistant to viral diseases typical of the cucumber plants.
The fruit (10-20 cm) is usually split in half to eat it and it tastes like a mixture of banana, melon and passion fruit. Interestingly the fruit of kiwano can be stored for a long period of time (3-5 months), in a dry place at room temperature.
