Motherwort, lion's tail seeds (Leonurus cardiaca)
The motherwort is an attractive and traditional medicinal plant, which is widespread from Europe to Iran. Leonorus cardiaca reaches heights of up to 1.50 m with bright red, purple to purple flowers.
The flowers are often visited by bees and bumblebees, the long flowering period lasts from June to September. The plants prefer a soil that is not too dry, rich in nitrogen. In the south of Europe, a semi-shady location should be chosen.
In the kitchen, the motherwort (the dried leaves) is used to season lentils and pea dishes, and also elaborating beer.
In folk medicine, Leonorus cardiaca is used for nervous heart problems (cardiaca), hyperthyroidism, menopausal symptoms, digestive problems, high blood pressure and bronchial asthma.
