Longan, Dragon eye seeds (Dimocarpus longan)
The longan tree is originary from Southeast Asia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, China and India. However, it is now also cultivated in Hawaii and other tropical and subtropical countries. The fruits are strongly reminding of lychee in taste and consistency, but are smaller (approx. 2 cm) and round.
Dimocarpus longan tree can reach a height of about 20m but is usually pruned significantly, which makes harvesting easier, older specimens can tolerate temperatures down to -2ºC for a short period.
The seeds should be planted immediately after receiving them, as they lose their germination capacity relatively quickly (6-12 months).
The fruits are usually used fresh or made into syrup.
As a medicinal plant, the fruits are usually used for stomach problems and sleeping disorders.
