Purslane (Portulaca oleracea)
Opinions about this succulent plant differ widely from those that call it a "weed" to those who consider it to be an extremely healthy and tasty vegetable. Purslane is rich in vitamin C and omega 3 fatty acid and was consumed as vegetable 3000 years ago. It can be used raw in salads (they taste acidic ) or as a vegetable. My personal favourite is with potato salad which is delicious. This plant can also be offered as a substitute for lettuce which tortoises love. Plant can be grown in pots all year round, indoor and well watered. As a medicinal plant it can be used to soothe sun burns and for intestinal problems.
