Sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum)
Synonym: Sesamum orientale
Syn: benne
The sesame plant originates from India, but it's grown worldwide in tropical and subtropical areas.
The plants are very drought-resistant due to their long roots.
The seeds of the sesame plant are used as a spice and as an oil plant. These can be cream-colored, brownish or black. Sesame seeds have a nutty taste and are part of e.g. halva and tahini, but can also be used in muesli or salad. See also Dukkah, Zhi ma jiang.
Sesame seeds contain large amounts of calcium and phosphorus, which is important for bones and teeth. They also have a high content of iron, magnesium, selenium and protein.
